MOVEMENT: a yoga-inspired gathering

We've always said that we believe in the power of social yoga, so we're putting the party back in politics with this monthly activism yoga class. We call it MOVEMENT.

MOVEMENT is a yoga-inspired gathering that helps shift us towards a better world.

For a donation of $10-20, you get to participate in a yoga class and a chance to vote on a creative idea. Community-minded activists and artists present their proposals, the group votes, and the winner gets all of the money raised. You can also help the presenters with your donated time, funding, connections, and expertise.

Have an idea that needs funds to move forward? Submit a one page proposal to alissa@alissanelson.com by midnight one week prior to event

Thinking about submitting a proposal? Go here for more information:

After class, we will share a half-priced beer courtesy of Indie Brewing Co while chatting with some like-minded people about how we're going to save our world.

10.45am - 75-minutes of YOGA
12.00pm - SOCIAL ACTIVISM (+ beer)

Dungeon Dharma: Play

Why so serious? Yoga in the dungeon is a place where you can explore your edges. With an open mind and a willingness to mess up in public, we can achieve anything.

This class will focus on playing around with inversions and arm balances. You’ll probably find something to laugh at while we explore the eight limbs of the dungeon dharma: sensation, breathwork, restraint, discipline, concentration, meditation, detachment, and total absorption.

Note: your physical safety is important! Bring a towel, blanket, or something else that will help you feel safe and secure.

Dungeon Dharma: Bondage

Bound yoga poses require flexibility, curiosity, determination, and compassion. They are not for the faint of heart, but are more attainable that you might believe at first.

This class will focus on lovingly warming up the body in preparation for bound yoga poses while we explore the eight limbs of the dungeon dharma: sensation, breathwork, restraint, discipline, concentration, meditation, detachment, and total absorption.

Note: feel free to bring a yoga strap, rope, or anything else that you could use to connect two points. Some rope will be available to borrow at the dungeon.

FLOW 50 hour sequencing training

Objective:

This module is for those new to teaching FLOW or those who are ready to explore new ways to guide FLOW classes. It is easy to get “stuck” teaching the same thing, and we as teachers need inspiration and fuel to get out of our formulaic way of being. Through worksheets, workshops, and thoughtful feedback, you will find a FLOW style that is uniquely you. Our FLOW philosophy is to keep people interested, safe, and confident in class. We teach people, “Don’t choreograph your yoga classes. Sequence them.”

You will leave with a simple way to fully master your class plan, making it easy for you to plan exciting, engaging, personalized classes with just a few minutes of your time.

This module includes:

Creativity to keep yourself and your students engaged and interested
Counterposing to keep yourself and your students safe
Clarity to keep yourself and your students calm, connected, and confident
Prerequisites:

This module is open to anyone seeking insight into yoga sequencing. It helps to have a solid anatomy and asana foundation, either through The Yoga Harbor's READY and STEADY modules or through your personal background.

In an interview with Self, Alissa describes this class saying: "Look at yoga not just as something that is super positive and all light and shiny, but also just giving you tools to deal with all the hard stuff and the shadow side of everything."

Relational Yoga: Healing From Trauma

Trauma etches its stories on the body, leading to cycles of hypervigilance and dissociation. Over time, yoga and meditation can help rewrite stories of struggle and suffering to ones of growth. In this class we aim to use physical movement and breath awareness to help unite body and mind and increase feelings of presence.
